But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord
their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a
riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not
bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves
stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
Jeremiah 17:7-8
When water is hard to find, most vegetation and people will die. However, some will adapt to the environment. In the Yucatan Peninsula, for example, there are some holes in the ground where the limestone surface has collapsed and the water that is deep underground is revealed (they are called cenotes) and the trees have adapted to this by growing extended roots to reach the water.
Keep this image in mind as you read today's passage again slowly. Trees with roots willing to reach the water will survive pretty much any situation. Which begs the question: How deep are your roots?
