And
when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try
to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their
fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever
get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then
no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows
what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will
reward you.
Matthew 6:16-18
One of the popular things people due during the Lent Season is to declare what they are going to give up for the next 40 days. Yes, "fasting" means you can give up something other than eating. You can use the time to "fast" from a bad habit (which can help break the cycle). You can "fast" by taking on a good habit (and make it a habit during the 40 days). You can change your eating habits (cut out ice cream and eat more salad).
But the key to Fasting, according to Jesus' teaching, is to not make it obvious! If we Fast so others will see us and be proud of our piety, then you have your reward already. If we Fast and just go about our regular routine, then we know God will reward us. You see, the purpose of Fasting is to bring our focus to God. So use the Lent Season to talk with God, and listen, so you can build that most important of relationships.
